Levels of Engagement
Every project is different. There will be varying levels of engagement used to collaborate with our community, and we expect that as we learn more about what works, we will revise the tools we use for engagement.
Guiding Golden has four basic levels of engagement, and a variety of tools that will be used intermittently between those levels. They range from basic distribution of information, to continued partnerships with community members. To make sure we set and meet expectations, look for the symbols below on each project to see how you can get involved. Remember, as projects happen, engagement opportunities come and go. So keep watching for your chances to participate!

We support the repair and protection of the historical Lunahn Trail. Jefferson County has suggested it is unsustainable, too steep and should be abandoned. It was in good shape until trail cutters initiated the erosion and it is certainly less steep than other JeffCo trails (red Rocks for example). Please Ciry of Golden fix and maintain our trail and let JeffCo Do their trail planning on other portions of south table mountain.

Golden has a vast collection of art for a small town. I'd love to see a well thought out approach to a Golden Cultural Arts Facility. I think the PAC is doing a good job. I think between the PAC and Foothills Art Center, Golden should be able to come up with a vibrant arts master plan.

I walk my dogs through many neighborhoods in Golden. I am concerned about the amount of trash that I see and the condition of some of the areas. The post office on 12th is deplorable. The flag that is on the flag pole is filthy and tattered. Surely there is something that we can do to correct some of this.

As a pedestrian and cyclist, I was eager to complete the bicycle/pedestrian survey but was disappointed there was no room for suggestions on improving pedestrian safety. Bicycling in Golden is great; pedestrian safety and convenience could be improved greatly, particularly at traffic circles and by eliminating the need to push a button when crossing at signalized intersections (If you miss the light by a second, you have to wait through a complete cycle to get a walk light). Also, the pedestrian crossing in front of Safeway no longer has lighted signs and is dangerous for students who trust they can safely cross there. Drivers typically don't stop for pedestrians entering crosswalks. Maybe better education would help. Thanks! Jill Jamieson, 2014 Washington Circle.

The speed limit on North Ford Street is 25 mph, but most cars/trucks are doing about 35 mph with frequent instances of over 50 mph. Additionally, the amount of traffic has increased by about 4x since the work on Washington Street was done a couple years ago. Drivers, both northbound and southbound, now choose to cut through North Ford Street to circumvent traffic on Highway 93. This portion of the street is very popular with cyclists, neighborhood kids riding/walking to/from the bus stop at Norman Park, numerous pedestrians and dog walkers. The sidewalk on the west side of the street is exceedingly narrow and only a few feet from cars speeding at 50 mph. As the design does not allow for widening sidewalks or creating a bike path, the most logical request would be to slow and reduce the traffic in our neighborhood.
We request that the City of Golden take action to mitigate vehicle speeds. An email has been sent to city officials and council. Thank you.

As a frequent pedestrian, I would like to see the walk signs come on automatically, rather than requiring people to press a button. Such a change might be especially helpful for visitors downtown, but I'd also really appreciate it at the intersection of Jackson and 19th, where it can be difficult for pedestrians to determine whether it is safe to cross when they walk up.

I would like to explore the results of Ordinance 2114 and the impact on the investment in redeveloping properties in the R2 Golden neighborhoods. Prior to adoption, I communicated my concerns to city counsel, Steve Glueck, and the city's planning staff that I believed the result would be private investment in redeveloping these old neighborhood properties would stop, and there would be a negative impact on property values in these neighborhoods because of that. Hope I'm proved wrong, but I'd like the city to respond.

Doing your refining survey is VERY repetitive and annoying. One of the biggest concerns that has been swept under the rug is cost for these three concepts for the corridor. WE need much more understanding of the costs to make informed choices and are any of them within or even near a budget that is going to be blown out of the water by the Covid 19 crisis?

We would like to see a simple bandshell or portable stage included in the plan. Financed by community organizations that would use it

It would be nice if those not living in the heart of Golden to be able to access the composting that those in downtown get to take advantage of. Provide a location to drop off the food waste and allow residents to take compost home for their gardens. Also it would be nice to provide a way for citizens to recycle tree branches and then be able to use the recycled wood mulch for our landscaping. A place to recycle used vegetable oil would also be nice. I would also like to see Golden tackle the plastic issue buy requiring people to pay for plastic bags, similar to what Boulder did and now Denver.

Add a walking path from the upper parking area at Golden Community Center to the lower area which links to Lions Park.
With the need for parking growing explore parking areas that are greener, rather than large slabs of asphalt or concrete; break them up, explore alternative surfaces.

Get serious about climate issues and start by eliminating all those Christmas lights, replace some city vehicles with electric bikes and electric cargo bikes, tax incentives for home vegetable gardens and rain water collection. Get locals to work locally. Help eliminate two car families. I see more bikes on cars than butts on bikes in Golden. As I see it Golden is a poser-town when it comes to real environmental action. Also use the funds saved to help get some affordable housing in Golden, I've had many qualified co-workers leave the town and state because they can't afford to live, I witnessed the same demise of affordable living in Evergreen, Kittredge, Morrison and the entire state for that matter. Greed and selective-ignorance are overtaking humanity.

my opinion for the Heart of Golden 2020 project is make it the new Golden Civic center without adding any housing along the corridor. An extra space could definitely be used for more parking

The Community Engagement Planning Guide needs to be available for print. I prefer to read a 77 page document and highlight along as I read, as opposed to only reading this on line. I also sent an email to Karlyn Tilley. M.L.
Guiding Golden is a place for our community to gather online and engage on issues that matter. From neighborhood plans to long-term construction projects, you can learn about issues with both short- and long-term impact, and help guide the decisions being made today that will direct where we are headed in the future.
We're on this journey together and everyone should have a say in where we go. It's your city - we want to hear your voice!
The City of Golden recently adopted this Community Engagement Planning Guide, designed to help our employees think through the best ways to engage our community, based on project size and scope. We share this document with you so that you understand our process as well.
